Travelling

Travelling allows you to unwind, relax and enjoy and have a lifetime experience, but this is only possible if you maintain your health. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are the most common and unwanted companions on any trip, however, if you want to experience authentic local cuisine when you travel, you can do so without getting ill.

Yes, it is possible, you just need to follow the steps given here and have an awesome travel experience.

  • Look for food that is hot and steaming

Food poisoning is caused by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with viruses, bacteria, chemicals or parasites. Contamination can even occur at home if the food is not handled or cooked properly. So, it is recommended that you look for food items that are steaming or smoking with heat. Hot temperatures kill bacteria that cause digestive problems and on the other hand, cool or lukewarm temperature encourages their growth. When in doubt, opt for boiling hot foods such as stews, soups and teas. These foods are continuously kept bubbling hot, so it’s more likely to have killed off harmful bacteria.

  • Watch for signs of food hygiene

If you like eating local food around the world, chances are that food standard won’t be the same as your home country. People may touch food with bare hands and much of it will not be stored properly. So when eating out remember to look for some basic signs of hygiene to avoid getting sick. Look if the place you wish to eat use tongs to handle food, use food covers or protectors or spinning fans to keep files off, dishes are prepared fresh, gloves and hair covers used and have sinks with soap and water for staff to clean hands.

However, if you are still not sure about the food hygiene then researchers have developed a smartphone app which pairs with a microscope camera adapter to analyse food and determine if bad bacteria are present. You just need to rinse the food item with water and place it on the chip which attracts and bind bacteria. Within half an hour the microscope which attaches to any smartphone camera including an iPhone reveals the bacteria. These low cost or cheap microscopes for sale will soon be in the market.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly

Sometimes, travellers own hands are responsible for picking up harmful bacteria and stuffing it straight into the body. So, always wash your hands thoroughly before you eat anything to ensure that you haven’t contributed to the problem. Washing hand thoroughly means washing with soap and water, rubbing the hands together, scrubbing them well in between fingers and under the nails for about 20 secs. and then dry with a clean towel. If clean water is not available, alcohol-based sanitisers or hand-wipes can be used.

  • Carry emergency food

Parents must be familiar with the emergency food, so bringing it along on your travel and replenishing your supply with trusted items is the best way to keep yourself and your children away from being exposed to potentially contaminated foods. Prepacked food items like nuts, cookies, energy bars, pretzels and even fruits are a great way to stave off the hunger until you find a dining place your trust.

The above-mentioned are some of the steps to prevent food poisoning while travelling.
